Welcome to New Weird America

Celebrating Sustainability

Welcome to New Weird America. We’re Brian and Olivia, and we’re so glad
you’ve found your way to our little corner of the world. What started as a
patch of land passed down through generations has grown into a living
experiment in self-reliance, sustainability, and community. Here, we
blend old-world knowledge with modern innovation to build a homestead
that not only feeds our family of seven, but also nurtures our neighbors,
our land, and our shared future. Whether you’re here to learn, lend a hand,
or just feel a little more connected to something real—thank you for being
part of this journey.

Greetings from our
Founders

Our Adventure Thus Far

In 2020, we began working full-time to transform our inherited homestead into a self-sustaining farm and
community hub. Over the past few years, we’ve expanded our gardens, raised animals, and built infrastructure
rooted in permaculture and off-grid principles. What started as a passion project has grown into a full-time
way of life—feeding our family, restoring the land, and sharing what we learn with others.

Right now at New Weird America, we’re focused on scaling up our garden and livestock operations to feed our family of seven year-round, with enough surplus to share. We’re actively restoring the land by removing invasive species and building infrastructure that works in harmony with the natural ecosystem. Our days are filled with planting, harvesting, composting, and caring for animals—all while continuing to clean up and improve the overall aesthetics of the homestead. Behind the scenes, we’re building a digital framework to document our research and experiments, developing community programs, and connecting with supporters and volunteers who want to be part of something real, rooted, and regenerative.

Nurturing a new world

Looking ahead, we’re building a future where New Weird
America becomes a model for sustainable, community-
centered living. Our goals include developing off-grid
infrastructure to reduce reliance on external utilities,
transforming wild spaces into thriving food forests, and
deepening our permaculture practices to increase
resilience. We're expanding our research and
documentation efforts to compare traditional skills with
modern techniques, preserving both for future
generations. We envision a vibrant network of
volunteers, learners, and neighbors coming together for
events, workshops, and mutual support. Above all, we
want the homestead to be a place where knowledge is
freely shared, the land is honored, and everyone has a
role in shaping a better, more connected world.

Charting the course of the future

The Land is Planted

What began as a nursery business and a Depression-era survival strategy slowly grew into a multigenerational homestead. In 2015, Brian moved back to the family land to help his grandmother Elaine, who dreamed of turning the property into a touchstone for the whole family. With a tent, a shovel, and a lot of curiosity, the first seeds—literal and metaphorical—were planted.

A Family Roots Down

In 2020, Brian met Olivia, and together they began building a shared vision of self-reliance and sustainability. That same year, they moved to the farm full-time, started growing more food, raising animals, and teaching their children through hands-on learning and homestead life. Their shared dream of New Weird America began to take real shape.

Living the Dream

In 2023, Brian committed full-time to the homestead, allowing the family to scale up operations and expand their vision. They began cleaning up the property, restoring native plant life, building out new infrastructure, and developing a public-facing presence to share their journey and connect with others.

Building the Future

Today, New Weird America is more than just a homestead—it’s a growing hub for community learning, collaboration, and sustainable living. The family is launching initiatives like the community archive, food forest development, and off-grid systems research, while inviting others to join in, support, and reimagine rural life together.

Our Path to Impact

New Weird America began as a deeply personal project—restoring family land, raising our children close to nature, and learning to live in a way that honors both tradition and the future. What started as a return to our roots has grown into something bigger: a quiet revolution in how people can live, grow, and give back—all from the ground up. Main Achievement: A Fully Functional, Self-Reliant Homestead Today, we’ve built a homestead that feeds our family of seven and offers surplus produce, eggs, and handmade goods through our on-site farm stand. This achievement represents years of hands-on labor, learning from elders, trial-and-error gardening, and a shared vision to live in balance with the land. We’ve built resilient systems for food, waste, and shelter—all scaled to a human level. What It Took: A Willingness to Learn and Start Small We didn’t arrive with all the answers—just a willingness to listen, learn, and work with what we had. Brian brought practical construction and electrical experience, Olivia brought a passion for research and tradition, and together we’ve built every structure, garden bed, and system ourselves. Progress has come season by season, inch by inch, grounded in intention and curiosity. Impact So Far: A Ripple at the Edges While most of our efforts remain within the fence line, our small farm stand has become a point of connection with our neighbors—offering a taste of what a different kind of living can produce. Each egg, jar, or seedling passed across that table represents not just food, but a philosophy: that we can take care of ourselves and each other, starting right where we are. Looking Ahead: From Homestead to Hub As we continue to refine our systems, we’re laying the groundwork to extend our impact. We’re building a community archive, developing open-source documentation of our practices, and preparing to host events, cleanups, and workshops. Our vision is to become a place where others can learn, contribute, and be inspired—not by perfection, but by the ongoing work of living with purpose.

Current Projects

The Community Archive

We’re preserving local stories, traditional skills, and folk knowledge in an open-access archive to keep regional wisdom alive for future generations.

Food Forest Project

We’re transforming wild, underused spaces into regenerative food forests that nourish both people and the local ecosystem—without disrupting its natural rhythms.

Off-Grid Research

We’re experimenting with small-scale, sustainable energy systems to reduce dependency on outside utilities and build a more resilient way of living.
